Winter Sports Recap

Congratulations to the winter athletes below:

Girl's Basketball Finishes Season Strong

Head Girls Basketball coach Matt Schelich had a milestone year and an accomplished team this season. Coach Schelich celebrated his 25th season of coaching and also notched his 400th career win!


"Our Girls Basketball teams had great seasons this year. The JV team was 17 & 4 and won the Northwest Conference. The varsity team was 15 & 10 and they were District Champs for the first time in four years. We had a great group of kids. They just kept making progress. They took care of business along the way. The team had a 3.66 overall grade point average and had All-State honors as far as that goes."


Congratulations, Girls Basketball!


College Signings

Congratulations to Kati Smith who broke the Kingsley High School record in the Pole Vault at Morley Stanwood on Saturday, 4/15/23 with a vault of 10’7”.


Kati also signed her letter of intent to pole vault at Northern Michigan University and plans to major in Biology/Conservation and Education.



Congratulations to Kyan Fessenden who signed his letter of intent to wrestle at Davenport University and pursue a major in urban education.


Career highlights:

  • 4-year varsity letter winner in Wrestling, 3-year varsity letterman in Football

  • 4 x All Mid-Michigan Conference, 4 x All-Region

  • 4 x District Champion, 2 x Regional Champion, 3 x All State (finishing 4th in 2020, 6th in 2021

  • Became the first ever individual state championship in Wrestling, winning 4-3 in the 2022 MHSAA State Wrestling Finals

Student-Athletes of the Week

February 13, 2023: Skylar Workman, Boys Basketball

Skylar is a junior on the varsity Stags boys’ basketball team. He scored 13 points with 4 rebounds and 3 assists in a win over Suttons Bay, and 16 points and two rebounds and two assists in the Stags’ win over Leland. Skylar also excels in football and track & field at Kingsley while carrying a 3.44 grade point average.



February 20, 2023: Max Goethals, Wrestling

Max is a junior on the varsity Stags wrestling team and has had an outstanding season for Kingsley with a 21-6 overall record, winning the Mid-Michigan conference championship, an MHSAA district championship, and qualifying for the MHSAA State Finals in the 175-pound weight class. Max also excels in football and track & field at Kingsley while carrying a 3.77 grade point average.



February 27, 2023: Grace Lewis, Girls Basketball

Grace is a junior on the varsity Stags girls’ basketball team. She scored 14 points versus St. Francis and led all scorers with 15 points in the Stags’ win over Benzie Central, shooting 7 of 10 from the 3-point line in the two games. Grace also excels in volleyball and softball at Kingsley while carrying a 4.0 grade point average.



March 6, 2023: Kyan Fessenden, Wrestling

Kyan is a senior on the varsity Stags wrestling team and capped off an incredible career by winning the MHSAA Individual State Championship in the 165-pound weight class at Ford Field – the first in Kingsley school history. Kyan finished his senior year with a 43-2 record and also excelled at football for the Stags.


March 13, 2023: Claire Dutton, Girls Basketball

Claire is a senior on the varsity Stags girls’ basketball team. She scored 6 points and 15 rebounds in the Stag’s District Championship win over Boyne City on Friday, March 3, and had 6 points and 9 rebounds in the Regional semifinals versus Houghton. Claire was the recipient of the B-CAM Academic Award and also excels in soccer at Kingsley while carrying a 3.93 grade point average.


April 3, 2023: Owen Buning, College Signee

Owen is a senior on the varsity Stags football, wrestling, and baseball teams. On Friday, March 17th, Owen signed his letter of intent to play football at Concordia University. He was a standout on the offensive and defensive lines at Kingsley while carrying a 3.54 grade point average.


April 10, 2023: Sam Goethals, College Signee

Sam is a senior on the varsity Stags football and wrestling teams. On Friday, March 17th, Sam signed his letter of intent to play football at Concordia University. He was an All Northern Michigan Football Conference Legends Division linebacker, and Division 3 All State Wrestler finishing 6th in the state of Michigan at 190-pounds while carrying a 3.45 grade point average.


April 17, 2023: AdeLynn Town

AdeLynn is a freshman catcher on the varsity Stags softball team and had an outstanding week for the Lady Stags going 8 for 12 at the plate with 2 doubles, a triple, and a homerun with 8 RBIs and 5 runs scored as the Lady Stags swept Cadillac and split with Kalkaska. AdeLynn also excels in volleyball and basketball at Kingsley while carrying a 4.0 grade point average. Picture coming soon.
