District Updates from Interim Superintendent Jason Stowe

Hello, Kingsley parents and community members,

I want to thank everyone for their support over the last two months at Kingsley Area Schools. I have truly enjoyed my time and feel fortunate to work with such great people. In this letter, I wanted to provide a few updates to families on a couple of topics that are currently being discussed.

School Safety

One issue that is always on the minds of our staff members is the safety of your children. In the past two months, we have done several things to increase the safety of the children inside our district.

The Michigan Department of Education has allocated funds for all schools in the state to perform a threat assessment and create digital maps for increased efficiency with law enforcement and fire and safety. We also installed “buzz-in” systems in each of the three schools. This will ensure that once school starts all doors in each building will be locked.

When visiting each school, please be sure to follow the instructions on the entrance doors.

I also applied for a matching grant for a School Liason Officer (SLO). The grant awards will take place in January and the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Department is excited about the possibility. Please know that every staff member puts the safety of the Kingsley students first.

Superintendent Search Process

The other big item coming up is the selection of a new superintendent. The position has been posted for the past six weeks, and now it is time for the interview process to begin.

This week, the board will decide who they would like to interview, and the first round of interviews will take place on Monday, December 5. Second round interviews will take place on Wednesday, December 14, with a decision coming soon after that.

Change is inevitable and it is up to every individual to determine how they will handle it. All school districts face new and uncertain challenges and Kingsley Area Schools is no different. The one thing I am certain of is that this staff is up to the task.

Thanks for your continued support and dedication to KAS,

-Jason Stowe Interim Superintendent
