Kyan Fessenden becomes First State Champion in Kingsley Schools' History, plus other Athletic News

Congratulations to wrestler Kyan Fessenden, who became the first State Champion in Kingsley Schools' history after winning the 165-lb weight class at Ford Field on Saturday, March 4th.

Ten Kingsley wrestlers headed to the State Tournament, with Gavyn Merchant earning 2nd place at 126-lbs and Sam Goethals earning 6th place at 190-lbs. For the full results from the tournament, read more here.

Several Kingsley student-athletes were also recognized for outstanding achievement in their respective winter sports:

Girl's Basketball

  • 1st Team All Northwest Conference – Hannah Grahn

  • 2nd Team All NWC – Grace Lewis & Grace Hillier

  • Honorable Mention All NWC – Chris Whims


Boys Basketball

  • Honorable Mention All NWC – Chase Bott, Zack Middleton


All-State Wrestling

  • Sam Goethals – 190-lbs, 6th Place

  • Gavyn Merchant – 125-lbs, State Runner-Up

  • Kyan Fessenden – 165-lbs, State Champion


Papano's Student-Athletes of the Week awarded for February 13 - March 13

February 13, 2023: Skylar Workman, Boys Basketball

Skylar is a junior on the varsity boys’ basketball team. He scored 13 points with four rebounds and three assists in a win over Suttons Bay, plus 16 points, two rebounds and two assists in the Stags’ win over Leland. Skylar also excels in football and track & field while carrying a 3.44 grade point average.


February 20, 2023: Max Goethals, Wresting

Max is a junior on the varsity wrestling team and had an outstanding season for Kingsley with a 21-6 overall record, winning the Mid-Michigan conference championship, an MHSAA district championship, and qualifying for the MHSAA State Finals in the 175-pound weight class. Max also excels in football and track & field while carrying a 3.77 grade point average.



February 27, 2023: Grace Lewis, Girls Basketball

Grace is a junior on the varsity girls’ basketball team. She scored 14 points versus St. Francis on Tuesday and led all scorers with 15 points in the Stags’ win over Benzie Central, shooting 7 of 10 from the 3-point line in the two games. Grace also excels in volleyball and softball while carrying a perfect 4.0 grade point average.


March 6, 2023: Kyan Fessenden, Wrestling

Kyan is a senior on the varsity wrestling team and capped off an incredible career by winning the MHSAA Individual State Championship in the 165-pound weight class at Ford Field on March 4. He is the first State Champion in Kingsley Area Schools' history. Kyan finished his senior year with a 43-2 record and also excelled at football for the Stags.


March 13, 2023: Claire Dutton, Girls Basketball

Claire is a senior on the varsity girls’ basketball team. She scored six points and had 15 rebounds in the Stag’s District Championship win over Boyne City on Friday, March 3rd. She scored six points and had nine rebounds in the Regional semifinals versus Houghton. Claire received the B-CAM Academic Award and also excels in soccer at Kingsley while carrying a 3.93 grade point average.
