NJROTC Cadets Receive Ranks at Inaugural Pinning Ceremony

On Wednesday, October 23, Kingsley High School celebrated the official start of its brand new Naval Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corp (NJROTC) at a community pinning ceremony.


45 high school cadets received their first ranks, JROTC pins, and Naval Anchors for their covers. Thank you to the local veterans and first responders who helped pin the students.


Community members gathered for the patriotic event that included marching, flag ceremonies, speeches, and more.


Instructor and Gunnery Sergeant Mathew Barr also recognized outstanding cadets and named Stag Battalion staff members.

Battallion Commander Natalie Sterk told UpNorthLive, “I felt a lot of pride. It’s a big accomplishment and it’s definitely something that you can look up on like, ‘Yeah, I did that. I was a part of that."

Kingsley High School is the first school north of Flint, Michigan to establish an NJROTC unit. The four-year elective is open to any student, and has a curriculum focused on naval science and leadership development.


Students explore topics like naval history, strategy, navigation, astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, marksmanship, and engineering. They also participate in physical training, military ceremonies, military site visits, and field trips.
