On February 6, the Kingsley High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corp (NJROTC) hosted veterans and community members for their first inspection.
This major milestone is the first step toward the unit being officially certified. Naval Base Great Lakes area manager Master Gunnery Sergeant Jason Rampa came in from Chicago for the drill, ceremony, and to award stellar cadets.
Mara VanWagner was one of the winners of the VFW Voice of Democracy Contest, Natalie Sterk earned Cadet of the Year, and Anna Bauer was recognized for being one of ten students internationally to earn the CNAF Flight Academy scholarship. She will spend 8-weeks this summer on a college campus earning her pilots license for free.
“It's a lot of hard work and effort that's been put into it over the last six months. I only get an hour with them each day, so they’ve got to work out of class to make it a success,” USMC Gunnery Sergeant Mathew Barr said to UpNorthLive News. “They've been working hard all year so they're very proud. As you can see, they take pride in wearing the uniform and what they're doing here.”
Thank you to all of the community members, veterans, first responders, and active duty military men and women who attended today's event.
