
In honor of Women’s History Month, NorthwestEd awarded more than 20 regional teachers who "enrich our schools, empower others, and build communities based on respect."
Second grade teacher Olivia Akerly and Kingsley Elementary Principal Kristin Goethals were both recognized as Women Leaders of Culturally Responsive Education.
"The Women Leaders of Culturally Responsive Education program celebrates the women in our schools who are making positive impacts in their classrooms and workspaces. At its core, Culturally Responsive Education focuses on nurturing relationships and improving
understanding among both student and adult populations," says Northwest Ed on their website.

Olivia Akerly, Second Grade Teacher

Olivia (Liv) Akerly, a second-grade teacher at Kingsley Elementary, cultivates a warm classroom environment where every student feels seen, heard and valued.
She prioritizes getting to know each of her students as individuals, recognizing that their unique backgrounds and lived experiences are strengths to be celebrated and
integrated into the learning process.”
Liv is a reflective practitioner who continuously seeks ways to refine her teaching methods and ensure equitable learning opportunities for all her students. Her dedication to professional growth, including active participation in local and regional cultural events, allows her to enrich her curriculum and broaden her students’ horizons.

Kristin Goethals, Elementary Principal

Kingsley Elementary Principal Kristin Goethals champions a truly welcoming environment. She understands and celebrates the unique abilities of each student and staff member, providing tailored support to ensure everyone can thrive.
Kristin’s leadership fosters a strong, supportive culture where everyone feels seen and respected for who they are. Her commitment to putting kids first is evident in her dedication to understanding each student’s specific needs and supporting their individual growth.
